Made For Sole Surfers
Sandalplane was an idea that was born in San Diego, California. Growing up at the beach in the 80’s-90’s we would grab one of our sandals using it to get that little advantage of getting into waves and getting you barreled. Unknowingly at the time a method out of convenience used all over the world. Fast forward to the early 2000’s, having a quiver or some could call it a collection of hard handplanes to choose from, all having their time or uses, I was looking for something different. With help from a sandal making friend, an idea made into reality. Following the many steps in exactly how quality rubber sandals are made. Sandalplane, a handplane made specifically for bodysurfing fun was created. Originally, very small batches were produced throughout the years, they were given to friends and underground bodysurfers that shared the stoke.
Using a Sandalplane is between pure bodysurfing with your hands-only and using a hard plane or handboard. Many modifications were made over the years, making them ridgid, different sizes, shapes, strap choices and combinations. Although the original prototypes and styles were fun to try-out, use, brain storm and talk about with friends. The realization not making them into something that they weren’t designed and made to be was key; simplicity was the intention.
Sandalplane are durable, universal, soft, safe in shorebreak, not worrying about it hitting your head, swimmable in any size surf, without the feel of ripping your shoulder off or the need to change your swimming stroke. Just enough to get you “in” or guide you where you need to be in a wave. Mix it up, small enough to use two, like swim paddles. They are extremely packable, and continue to make it on trips around the world, solo or with the rest of the quiver, finding their way in a board bag or back pack. Easy to use for just about anyone, any level of experience, all levels of stoke.
The only known dynamic bodysurfing handplane, use it as it was made or flex your hand to change the shape. Every Sandalplane is made in San Diego, California USA.
